AHL: Rural Realism: The Influence of Jules Bastien- Lepage

In this talk, Art historian Catherine Wallace unveils the global impact of Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848 – 1884), the French rural realist painter. Delving into the late 19th century, Wallace illuminates how Bastien-Lepage's en plein air (outdoor) paintings depicting rural French peasants resonated across international art circles.

Wallace will discuss the profound influence he exerted on renowned artists, including the Newlyn School, The Glasgow Boys, the Skagen art colony in Denmark, and the Heidelberg group in Australia.

Catherine Wallace is a freelance art historian, writer and lecturer specialising in British and  European 19th and 20th century art with a focus on artists who were based in Cornwall, England. Wallace also has an in depth knowledge of commercial contemporary art and artists from Cornwall. Catherine Wallace has over 30 years experience as a curator and writer on art. This informs the lectures and guided tours she now offers online and live in Cornwall.
