Alison Bevan: Art and the Sea: Charles Napier Hemy and the Newlyn School
Thursday 26th January, 7.30pm
£8.00/£7.00 (RCPS Members, Conc & Students)
Alison’s talk will explore the work of Charles Napier Hemy RA, RWS (1841–1917) in the context of the Newlyn School painters.
West Cornwall’s spectacular scenery has attracted visiting artists since the early 19th century. In the 1880s, a group of British painters began to gather in Newlyn who shared a desire to paint in the rural realist style of their European counterparts. discovering a similar source of inspiration in Cornwall.
The first resident artist was Walter Langley, who moved to Newlyn in 1882, and by September 1884, there were at least twenty-seven resident artists working in the village, while others who were recognised as part of the ‘Newlyn School’ based themselves in St Ives, Lelant or Falmouth.
One such was Charles Napier Hemy, who was born in Newcastle, but spent the majority of this career in Falmouth and became best known for his paintings of maritime scenes around the Cornish coast. A friend and colleague of the Newlyn School painters, his work was exhibited alongside theirs in his lifetime and shares some of their subjects and techniques.
Settling himself in Falmouth and using a converted fishing boat as a floating studio, Hemy became acclaimed as the most accomplished marine painter of his generation. From his childhood he developed a life-long passion for sailing and his work demonstrates his intimate knowledge of the sea’s myriad shapes and hues. His friend, fellow artist Sir Frank Brangwyn, wrote “His knowledge of the sea was superb. As a draughtsman of wave forms he stands alone.”
Alison Bevan is Director of Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, which specialises in exhibiting the work of the Newlyn, Lamorna and early St Ives art colonies (1880-1940). Since moving to Cornwall in 1999, she has gained particular expertise about Newlyn School paintings, on which she has lectured in the UK, USA and France, including at the Malvern and Daphne Du Maurier Festivals and the Celtic Congress

taking his all-new hour of razor- sharp observational comedy across
the UK this Autumn with his show
'Ying and Young'. Charming and charismatic, a natural born
observational storyteller, Seann is one of the most frighteningly
precocious talents to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in years.
Within two years of his first comedy performance Seann became the
winner of the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year. Shortly after,
other accolades included Chortle Best Breakthrough Act Nominee 2010
and Chortle Best Compere Nominee 2011. Seann has also been listed as
one of DAVE's top 10 stand-ups to catch in 2011.

Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC2), Mock The Week (BBC2), 8 Out Of 10
Cats (Channel 4) and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow (BBC1).
"to describe his act, however, cannot do justice to the energy being
sweated out on stage....hysterical, Walsh is well on his way to
becoming a star attraction"(The Independent)
"Seann Walsh got one of the biggest reactions of the night, and
deservedly so. Observational comics have their detractors, but there
is still something special about the comedy of recognition when it is
done properly and with creativity as it is with Walsh" (The British
Comedy Guide)
"A gifted observational comedian...a well rounded, accomplished
performer...undoubtedly a star in the very near future" (The Scotsman)
"Seann Walsh is an extremely funny man.... Walsh had the crowd in
