Dir: Ari Folman (2008) Israel/Germany/France 1hr 30min Subtitled

Ari Folman's animated documentary is a ferociously honest exploration of the reliability of memory and the long-term impact of violence on young soldiers. On realising he has no memory of serving in the Israeli Army during the First Lebanon War in 1982, Folman tracks down his fellow soldiers, hoping to solve the mystery of his psychological blindspot by collecting their memories. Folman has elevated the film's impact by securing the extraordinary involvement of Yoni Goodman, who created astonishing animations of images originally shot on film. This unique visual approach elevates Waltz With Bashir beyond our jaded impressions of ever-present news footage – and into the surreal terrain of image and memory
