Dir: Gil Kenan (2008) US 1hr 40mins
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Bill Murray, Henry Treadaway
A dystopian sci-fi adventure from the director of Monster House. Kenan’s second feature successfully marries a kids’ adventure vibe with imagery packed with sprightly visual thrills and doesn’t talk down to its intended family audience. With fluid visual storytelling it draws us into Ember’s subterranean world, where 12-year-old Lina (Saoirse Ronan) and her friend Doon (Treadaway) must search for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city's existence and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever. Adapted from Jeanne Duprau’s novel by ‘Edward Scissorhands’ writer Caroline Thompson, this seriously entertaining film celebrates the idea that the young will find the strength to imagine a better future for themselves. Also stars Tim Robbins and Toby Jones.
