Based on Evelyn Waugh's 1945 classic British novel, Brideshead Revisited is a poignant story of forbidden love, class snobbery, guilt, and the loss of innocence set in England prior to WW2.Writer Andrew Davies and director Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) have concentrated on the doomed love story viewed in flashback through the eyes of outsider Charles Ryder (Goode) and his relationship with Sebastian Flyte (played by the emerging star Ben Wishaw). Emma Thompson’s complex portrayal as Lady Marchmain is outstanding in a top-notch cast. It moves between halcyon days at Oxford in the 1920s and a more sombre reality 20 years later. This new film version revels in stunning period detail yet exhibits admirable, intelligent directorial restraint.
