Ed Harris returns to directing with a fine western – and Westerns always need to be seen in the cinema! He and Viggo Mortensen star as a pair of hired guns protecting a small town from a thuggish rancher (Jeremy Irons). It's a subtle and sober film, handsomely photographed with wide-angled majesty, which indulges in precious little myth-making, though Harris plays interesting variations on familiar western themes.
